Bill 119, also known as the Workplace Safety and Insurance Amendment Act, introduced expanded compulsory WSIB coverage for the construction industry in Ontario. Effective January 1, 2013, this legislation requires most individuals and businesses involved in construction to register with WSIB—even if they don’t have employees.

• Sole proprietors with or without employees
• Partners in a partnership involved in construction
• Executive officers of corporations who perform construction work
These groups must register and obtain WSIB coverage to comply with provincial law. Registration must be completed within 10 calendar days of hiring the first employee.
